EDUC 3023 - Science of Reading 1

This course equips educators with essential skills to become effective literacy teachers by integrating structured literacy practices based on the science of reading. Educators will explore foundational skills, including phonological and phonemic awareness, basic phonics, and early oral language and listening development, to build strong reading foundations. Emphasis is placed on using standards to guide instruction, selecting and applying assessment tools, and progress monitoring to adapt teaching to meet diverse student needs. By focusing on structured literacy’s core principles and foundational social-emotional skills, this course prepares educators to deliver impactful, standards-aligned literacy instruction in early childhood and elementary settings. This course includes practicum hours, allowing educators to apply structured literacy concepts through hands-on teaching experiences and deliver targeted literacy lessons.

Prerequisites: Admission to Teacher Education Program & EDUC 3123 .
